It supports both lossy and lossless compression in a single container, with optional alpha and animation. In lossy mode it typically beats JPEG by 25–35% at matching quality. In lossless mode it beats PNG by 20–30%.

For photographs AVIF usually produces 20–30% smaller files than WebP at the same perceived quality, thanks to the AV1 video codec it is based on. WebP still wins on encoding speed and has broader browser support on older devices, so the two are complementary rather than one replacing the other.

Yes. Safari has supported WebP since version 14 (macOS Big Sur, iOS 14, released in 2020). All current Safari versions decode both lossy and lossless WebP.

Yes. PNG uses DEFLATE compression, which is strictly lossless: pixels decoded from a PNG are bit-identical to the source. Size reductions come from better filter choices and DEFLATE tuning (tools like oxipng), never from discarding image data.

No. Classic JPEG has no alpha channel. If you need transparency you must use PNG, WebP or AVIF. JPEG XL adds alpha but is not yet broadly supported in browsers.
