AVIF re-encoding in the browser
PicBrewery uses libavif (AOM AV1 encoder) compiled to WebAssembly. Re-encoding at tuned quality and stripping metadata can reduce file size 5–15% on already-compressed AVIFs.
Encode time is slower than JPEG or WebP — expect a few seconds per megapixel on typical hardware.

Does compressing AVIF lose quality?
Lossy AVIF re-encode is lossy. Adjust quality under Advanced settings if you need higher fidelity.
Why is AVIF encoding slow?
AV1 compression is CPU-intensive. PicBrewery runs libavif in Web Workers, but a megapixel image can take 1–3 seconds or more.
Will alpha transparency survive?
Yes — AVIF alpha is preserved in the AVIF output column.
Can I batch-compress AVIF files?
Yes — up to 20 files per batch with ZIP download.
Does PicBrewery resize AVIF images?
No — same dimensions, re-encode only.
